The stage adaptation of the novella “The Activist” will debut April 22-26 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
In the story by poet and Brown University professor Renee Gladman, conflicting news reports say that a bridge has been destroyed by “terrorists,” that it fell on its own or is still standing, and that there wasn’t a bridge at all. Activists and journalists are pursued by government agents for a crime that may or may not have been committed – against a bridge that may or may not have existed.
The piece, with video by UNC assistant professor of communication studies Ed Rankus, will be performed April 22, 25 and 26 at 6 p.m. and April 23 and 24 at 8 p.m. in Swain Hall’s studio 6. Tickets ($5-$20) are available in 114 Bingham Hall, at (919) 962-2311 or at the door.
Gladman will give a reading at 3:30 p.m. on April 23 at the Bulls Head Bookstore and a post-show discussion that evening.
The adaptation is presented by the Performance Collective, a group directed by Tony Perucci, assistant professor of performance and cultural studies. It is sponsored by the communication studies department in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Carolina Women’s Center.
