James S. Marks, M.D., senior vice president and director of the health group at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, will lecture April 9 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The talk, at 1 p.m. in the Rosenau Hall auditorium, is part of the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s 2010 Dean’s Lecture Series. A reception will follow.

Prior to joining the foundation in 2004, Marks directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. During a decade at the CDC, Marks developed and advanced ways to prevent and detect diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes, reduce tobacco use and address the nation’s growing obesity epidemic.

His work with the foundation is focused on childhood obesity, public health and vulnerable populations.

“Jim Marks is one of the most visionary, articulate public health leaders in the field today,” said Leah Devlin, D.D.S., Gillings Visiting Professor and former North Carolina health director. “I encourage everyone to come listen to him and ask questions about his exciting ideas.”
