Performances creating virtual and real theatrical experiences for audiences will be performed Feb. 18-21 and Feb. 25-27 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Collectively titled the “Virtual Performance Factory,” the short plays and performance pieces are by playwrights, screenwriters and video game writers from across the country. Actors will interact with the audience; actors and audience members will see or interact with projections on multiple screens, multiple rooms, a video game and laptop computers.
“The goal of this project was to see how digital technology can dialogue with art to make something new – in this case, the art of live performance,” said Joseph Megel, managing director of performance in UNC’s communication studies department and of the “Virtual Performance Factory.”
The series is presented by the department, part of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Icarus Studios in Cary.
The Feb. 18-20 shows will be part of the CHAT Festival at UNC: Collaborations: Humanities, Arts & Technology. The festival, Feb. 16-20 at UNC, will feature lectures, discussions, exhibits and performances that explore ways in which new technologies are transforming the expression of the arts and humanities.
