This portion of Pittsboro Street will remain closed for the next 18 months as work continues on the replacement of the steam tunnel serving the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The right lane of Pittsboro Street in the half-block between the Carolina Inn entrance and McCauley Street will be closed starting Saturday (Jan. 23). This portion of Pittsboro Street will remain closed for the next 18 months as work continues on the replacement of the steam tunnel serving the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Pittsboro Street’s left lane will remain open to traffic. Adjacent traffic signals will be timed to compensate for the lane closure on Pittsboro Street, but delays and congestion are still likely, especially during peak periods.

The right sidewalk along this half-block of Pittsboro Street will be closed to pedestrians. The Chapel Hill Transit bus stop located in this portion of Pittsboro Street, in front of the Newman Catholic Student Center, is being relocated approximately 200 feet to the north in an area where both lanes are open.

The lane closure on Pittsboro Street follows the completion of the steam tunnel project along Ransom Street, a portion of which had been closed since May 2009. Ransom Street will reopen to traffic on Thursday (Jan. 21).

The steam tunnel runs along a UNC-owned right-of-way running parallel to and north of McCauley Street, crossing Columbia, Pittsboro and Ransom streets to connect the campus near Sitterson Hall to the Cogeneration Facility at 575 W. Cameron Ave. The original steam tunnel was installed in 1939 and now needs replacement to avoid structural failure and to continue to provide steam service to the UNC campus.
