Carey is associate professor of medicine and UNC Breast Center medical director. Her address continued a tradition of having respected members of the faculty deliver the December Commencement address. Carey joined the UNC faculty in 1998 and has directed the breast center since 2003. A graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, she is a clinical faculty member in the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Chancellor Holden Thorp presided at the ceremony for students who graduated in August as well as those graduating in December. Administrators anticipate awarding 1,197 bachelor’s, 767 master’s, 281 doctoral and 33 professional degrees, for a total of 2,278 degrees. The professional degrees are from the schools of dentistry, law, medicine, nursing and pharmacy. An estimated crowd of nearly 3,000 attended the ceremony.

Graduates in Carolina blue (bachelor’s degree recipients) and black (master’s, doctoral, professional) caps and gowns entered the Smith Center to the music of “Procession of the Nobles” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and “Konigsmarsch” by Richard Wagner, played by the 50-member UNC Ceremonial Band. Other music included the National Anthem and “Hark the Sound,” both led by vocalist Clare Jensen FitzGerald. Welcoming remarks were delivered by Charles H. Mercer Jr. of the UNC Board of Governors, Robert W. Winston III, chair of the UNC Board of Trustees, and Eleanor Saunders Morris, chair of the General Alumni Association board of directors.
