A 17th-century opera, a new work by the UNC Symphony Orchestra and holiday jazz favorites are among upcoming events in the music department’s 2009-2010 season at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

 “We offer a marvelous array of concerts, lectures and master classes in our 2009 fall season,” said Terry Rhodes, professor and chair of the music department, a part of UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences. “We’ll also honor tenor and music professor Stafford Wing’s 40 years of service to the University with events and a reunion.”

The department will host Grammy Award-winning tenor Anthony Dean Griffey as artist in residence this year. Griffey will teach master classes and coach voice students – working with chamber music students and UNC Opera students – and speaking in select classes.

Two of Griffey’s master classes will be free to the public: Sept. 21 and March 15; both are at 4 p.m. in Hill Hall Auditorium. For more information about Griffey’s residency, visit http://uncnews.unc.edu/content/view/2657/107/.

The department will host more than 100 events from September through April 2010, in Hill Hall Auditorium, Memorial Hall, the new Kenan Music Building and other campus venues.   • Sunday (Sept. 20): Members of the Carolina Wind Quintet perform with guest artist Wonmin Kim, pianist. Music by Glinka, Reinecke and Poulenc. 3 p.m., Hill Hall auditorium. $15, public; $10, UNC students, faculty and staff.
  • Sept. 25: The Vega Quartet. Music by Haydn, Mendelssohn and Chausson: “Two Anniversaries and More France and Romance.”With UNC faculty musicians Richard Luby, violin, and Mayron Tsong, piano. 8 p.m., Gerrard Hall. $15, public; $10, UNC students, faculty and staff.
  • Oct. 14: UNC Symphony Orchestra. Premiere of the commissioned work “Of Angels and Neurones,” by Michael Gandolfi, and Schumann’s Symphony No. 3, “Rhenish.” 7:30 p.m., Memorial Hall. $15, public; $10, UNC students, faculty and staff.
  • Nov. 7: Emerging Artist Concert: ENHAKE. Drawing its name from the Seminole (Creek) word for “sound” or “call,” ENHAKE is a classical chamber music ensemble with members from South Korea and the United States. 8 p.m., Hill Hall Auditorium. $15, public; $10, UNC students, faculty and staff.
  • Nov. 11: Carolina Choir with the Bruckner Orchestra of Linz, an Austrian ensemble. Dennis Russell Davies, conductor. Philip Glass’ “Symphony No. 7: A Toltec Symphony” and Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.” 7:30 p.m., Memorial Hall. $30-75, public; $10, UNC students.
