Andrew Chaikin, author of “A Man on the Moon” and “A Passion for Mars” and one of the world’s leading experts on space exploration, will speak at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center on the UNC campus Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.
Chaikin will provide a virtual tour of the moon with behind-the-scenes glimpses at the lives of America’s best-known astronauts. He will also discuss the upcoming LCROSS (Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite) mission. Chaikin says the mission is important because it may tell NASA if the moon has ice — and, thus, water — to support human explorers during future expeditions to the moon.
Chaikin’s presentation, sponsored by NASA’s Ames Research Center, is free and open to the public. Admission is first-come, first-served while seats remain. Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is located at 250 E. Franklin St. in Chapel Hill. For more information, visit www.moreheadplanetarium.org or call (919) 962-1236.
