James A. Joseph, former ambassador to South Africa and the only U.S. ambassador to present his credentials to President Nelson Mandela, will speak Sept. 17 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Joseph, who was ambassador from 1996 to 1999, will discuss “Remaking America: Higher Education and Civic Engagement.” He will deliver the Thomas Willis Lambeth Lectureship in Public Policy at 5:30 p.m. in Gerrard Hall. The talk, followed by a reception, is free to the public.
Joseph received the Order of Good Hope, the highest honor South Africa bestows on a citizen of another country. He wrote “The Charitable Impulse” (1989) and “Remaking America” (1995). He is working on a book that focuses on ethics in public life.
Joseph is a professor of the practice of public policy studies at Duke University. He launched the U.S.-Southern Africa Center for Leadership and Public Values at Duke to help emerging leaders in southern Africa contribute to the development of their countries and the region.
The Lambeth Lectureship in the College of Arts and Sciences honors 1957 UNC alumnus Thomas Willis Lambeth. It was endowed in 2006 to bring to campus distinguished speakers who are practitioners and/or scholars of public policy.
