Becoming a Tar Heel (Education Life quarterly supplement)
The New York Times
… When we came back to win (101-87, no less!), I could barely stand it. Singing the alma mater (with the tag, "Go to hell, Duke!" taking on special relevance) as we jogged to Franklin Street, I felt more a part of a community than I ever had. And when we sang, "and when I die, I'm a Tar Heel dead," I believed that. As a native New Yorker, I've never been sentimental. Carolina changed me in that way. Maybe it's O.K. to be a little corny – and to love a place with your whole heart. (Emily Banks, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, class of 2012, English major.)
Becoming a Dukie (and an American) (Education Life quarterly supplement)
The New York Times
… My quest for another beautiful companion on the way back, by wearing the same sweatshirt, was thwarted by a hard-core University of North Carolina fan. Only thing he had to say to me, his tone threatening and desperate, was that "U.N.C. is going to beat Duke." I was fresh to basketball and didn't know much.
