Bruce W. Carney, a physics and astronomy professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was re-elected chair of the board of directors of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy.

Carney is interim dean of UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences and the Samuel Baron Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy. He has been a member of the UNC faculty since 1980.

The association, an international consortium of universities and nonprofits, manages two national observatories for the National Science Foundation and the Space Telescope Science Institute for NASA.

Carney is a scholar of optical and infrared photometry and spectroscopy, stellar populations and globular cluster ages. He has many publications to his credit, including the book “Star Clusters” (2001).

Among many leadership positions, he has been president of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific and chair of the board of directors for the International Gemini Observatory. He also has served on the federal Astronomy and Astrophysics Advisory Committee, which advises the National Science Foundation, NASA, the Department of Energy and the Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Before being appointed interim dean of the college, a one-year term that ends June 30, Carney was senior associate dean for the sciences and chair of the department of physics and astronomy.

Carney was instrumental in shaping the vision and raising funds for the SOAR Telescope in Chile, which UNC faculty and students use on site and remotely from Chapman Hall on campus, part of the Carolina Physical Sciences Complex. He also has been involved in planning and developing the complex, the largest construction project in the University’s history. The first two buildings in the complex opened in 2006 and 2007.
