The UNC Symphony Orchestra will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Concerto for Flute and Harp” and Sergei Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet Suite No. 2” on April 27 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Soloists for the concerto will be flutist Brooks de Wetter-Smith and harpist Laura Smithburg Byrne. The 100-member orchestra, conducted by Tonu Kalam, will present “Romeo and Juliet” in the second half of the program. The three are faculty members in the music department in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences.
The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall on Cameron Avenue. Tickets – $15 general admission, $10 for UNC students, faculty and staff – are available at the Memorial Hall box office or by calling (919) 843-3333.
“Concertos featuring more than one instrument are not all that common, and this particular Mozart concerto combining flute and harp is unique,” Kalam said. “It’s an absolutely gorgeous work and very popular with listeners, and scored for a smaller group of players accompanying the flute and harp. The Prokofiev piece is a half-hour-long suite of excerpts from his full-length ‘Romeo and Juliet’ ballet and features the full UNC Symphony Orchestra.”
De Wetter-Smith, the James Gordon Hanes Distinguished Professor of music, appears as a recitalist, concert soloist and master class teacher. He has performed in 20 nations and nearly all 50 states. Byrne has performed as a professional harpist throughout the country in symphony, ballet and opera orchestras and is praised for her sensitive performances as well as her spirited collaborations with the area’s finest musicians.
