The American Institute of Architects has elected University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill director of facilities planning and University architect Anna Wu to its 2009 College of Fellows.
The seven-member Jury of Fellows elevated 112 AIA members to fellowship for their standard of excellence and notable contributions to the advancement of the profession of architecture. The jury selected Wu for her advancement of the living standards of people through government and industry.
Wu will receive her fellowship medal on May 1 during the Investiture of Fellows Ceremony at the 2009 National AIA Convention and Design Exposition in San Francisco. The ceremony will be at 4 p.m. in Grace Cathedral.
Out of 86,000 AIA members, fewer than 2,765 are honored with the fellowship. Fellows must have at least 10 years of AIA membership. Candidates are nominated within five categories based on design, education and practice, leadership, government and industry, and service to society.
Founded in 1952, the College of Fellows seeks to stimulate a sharing of interests among fellows, promote the purposes of the AIA, advance the profession of architecture and be of increasing service to society.
Wu has served as University architect and director of facilities planning since 2001, working with campus clients, architects and others to program and design new and expanded facilities. Her responsibilities include supervision of the University’s $1.1-billion Capital Improvement Program, an eight-year program during which the University has doubled its construction spending for renovations and new construction.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Wu earned her master’s degree in architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Since joining the UNC staff in 1995, Wu has managed more than 12 projects, including the renovations of Memorial Hall, Lenoir Hall and Carroll Hall.
