In the midst of troubled economic times, the computer science department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is extending its graduate program application deadline to give interested applicants a chance to earn an advanced degree.
The department, part of the UNC College of Arts and Sciences, has extended the application deadline for fall 2009 admissions to May 31. The initial deadline was Jan. 1.
The department decided to extend the deadline after faculty discussed the possibility that in the current economic environment, local technology industry employees might get greater benefit than usual from earning an advanced computer science degree that increases their skill set.
“We feel it is important to be of service to the people of North Carolina, and this is one way we can help meet that goal,” said Jan Prins, department chair. “Our hope is that extending our graduate admissions cycle will give North Carolinians who want to expand their computer science skills the option of working toward a graduate degree beginning this fall, rather than having to wait for the following academic year.”
UNC’s computer science department is a nationally ranked program that offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. More information about its graduate programs can be found at http://www.cs.unc.edu/Admissions.
