Swaminathan is the senior associate dean of academic affairs and the Kay and Van Weatherspoon distinguished professor of operations, technology and innovation management at the business school. The professor grew up in New Delhi, but the idea for the book came out of his experiences when he returned to India in 2004 after a long absence. The country he had known had changed dramatically, and he wrote the book to explain the transformation.
“Indian Economic Superpower: Fiction or Future?” analyzes the opportunities and obstacles in off shoring, manufacturing, information technology, health care, logistics and sales and marketing. It also identifies future opportunities in other sectors that are in early stages of development and might offer similar growth opportunities. It concludes with a discussion of the implications of the current global economic crisis on India’s future growth.
While Swaminathan wrote about 50 percent of the book, he enlisted experts in other fields to share decades of research on India. Contributors are from the University of Michigan, New York University, Indian Institute of Management, Purdue University, University of Texas at Austin and Deloitte Consulting. In addition, UNC professors contributed two chapters:
- “India’s Aviation Sector: Dynamic Transformation,” co-authored by Kasarda, Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise director and Kenan Distinguished Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship
- “Entering India’s Product and Service Markets? Ten Caveats That Can Help You Tame the Asian Elephant,” co-authored by marketing professor Balasubramanian.
