Media representatives are invited to cover visits to Carrboro, Durham and Greensboro by faculty and residents from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. Representatives from the school’s department of pediatric dentistry will provide dental screenings, preventative care and restorative treatments as part of the “Give Kids a Smile” national children’s dental access day.

Friday (Feb. 6)
8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Orange County Health Department
200 N. Greensboro St., Carrboro

Drs. Elizabeth Prada, Ray Tseng, Stephanie Blumenshine and Bien Lai, UNC pediatric dentistry residents, will provide care for children at the Orange County Health Department’s Carrboro Dental Clinic. Dr. Michael Day, dental director for the Orange County Health Department and an adjunct faculty member at the UNC School of Dentistry, is coordinating the visit.

Durham County Health Department
414 E. Main St., Durham

Drs. Jonelle Grant, Kimon Divaris, Jossein Shahangian and Jina Kang, UNC pediatric dentistry residents, will provide care to children at the Durham County Health Department. Dr. Elizabeth Shick, an adjunct faculty member at the UNC School of Dentistry, is coordinating the visit.

Gateway Education Center
3205 E. Wendover Ave., Greensboro

Dr. Bill Vann, a pediatric dentist and distinguished professor of pediatric dentistry at UNC, and Dr. Bob Cherry, a UNC pediatric dentistry resident, will provide care for children at Gateway Education Center, a Guilford County school serving children with special health-care needs.

Give Kids a Smile, founded by the American Dental Association, is held annually to provide free dental care for children from underserved communities and to raise awareness of the importance of access to dental care for children. The 2008 North Carolina Child Health Report Card reported that 19 percent of kindergartners in the state had untreated tooth decay in 2007.

Please note that children receiving care on the day have already been selected. The event is not open to members of the public except for those who have already been selected to participate.
