Terry Sullivan, Ph.D., associate professor of political science in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences and executive director of the White House Transition Project, was invited to and attended the final meeting of the President’s Transition Coordinating Council on Friday (Jan. 9).

President George Bush created the coordinating council to help ensure a smooth transition from his administration to that of President-elect Barack Obama. The goal is for new leaders to be ready to function efficiently on day one for the new team instead of losing time to a learning curve.

“This interdepartmental coordinating group is charged with responsibility for making sure the transition goes smoothly both from an administrative and security standpoint,” said Sullivan.

White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten chairs the council, whose other members include the counsel to the president, the assistant to the president for presidential personnel, the director of the office of management and budget, the attorney general and the assistant to the president for national security affairs.

On Jan. 28, Sullivan will brief 19 foreign visitors to the Research Triangle area sponsored by the State Department. Topics will be the presidential transition and the responsibilities of different jobs in the White House. Most of the visitors will be from emerging democracies in Africa.

Sullivan can be reached at (919) 593-2124 or sullivan@ibiblio.org.
