Carolina Performing Arts will ring in the holiday season in traditional fashion this December when it presents two performances of Carolina Ballet’s acclaimed seasonal classic, “Nutcracker,” at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The performances, at 8 p.m. Dec. 6 and 2 p.m. Dec. 7, will be in Memorial Hall on Cameron Avenue.

With music by the North Carolina Symphony and featuring the award-winning dancers of Carolina Ballet, “Nutcracker” has become a staple of the holiday season in the Triangle. Now in its eighth season in repertory, “Nutcracker” is both a family favorite and a peerless display of choreography and storytelling.

Choreographed and directed by Robert Weiss, artistic director of Carolina Ballet, “Nutcracker” is based on author E.T.A. Hoffmann’s more macabre “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” Carolina Ballet’s interpretation  is an adaptation of the original work by Pytor Tchaikovsky.

“The Nutcracker” was Tchaikovsky’s third and last major ballet composition.

“Carolina Ballet’s ‘Nutcracker’ is one of those shows that we take pride in bringing to Memorial Hall each year,” said Emil Kang, executive director for the arts at UNC. “Our support of Carolina Ballet’s most enduring performance strengthens the artistic ties of our communities.”
