More than 100 ROTC midshipmen and cadets will assemble in dress uniforms at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 for the annual Veteran’s Day ceremony at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

A color guard representing the Naval/Marine, Air Force and Army ROTC programs will assemble outside Gerrard Hall at 10:40 a.m. before presenting the colors inside the building for the free public ceremony.

Capt. Charles Gibson, a Carolina alumnus and commanding officer of the Naval Air Station in Meridian, Miss., will speak. Veterans will be asked to stand and be recognized as the conflict in which they served is named. Attendees are invited to a reception after the ceremony.

Members of the campus and local communities, including veterans, are invited to attend. Limited parking is available in town pay lots off Rosemary Street. Gerrard Hall is two blocks away on Cameron Avenue near the Old Well.

The Naval ROTC Unit will sponsor this year’s ceremony, organized by active duty Gunnery Sgt. William Cuellar and student and Midshipman Elizabeth Vancott, a senior from Isle of Palms, S.C. Additional sponsors will be the College of Arts and Sciences and its curriculum in peace, war and defense. UNC also is home to Air Force and Army ROTC units.

Veterans Day, formerly Armistice Day, falls on Nov. 11, the anniversary of the armistice signing by the Allies and the Germans in 1918 that ended World War I. For more information, call the UNC military science department at (919) 962-3671.
