Reporters covering the 2008 general election are invited to sit in at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law Annex while volunteers take calls for the North Carolina for Election Protection toll-free voting hotline on Election Day.

The Center for Civil Rights at the UNC School of Law and the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law are sponsoring the one-day hotline for voters who have questions about voting or who think they have been denied their right to vote (http://www.law.unc.edu/news/story.aspx?cid=138). The number is (866) OUR-VOTE or (866) 687-8683. The hotline is part of a national nonpartisan effort to keep voting access fair (http://www.866ourvote.org/).

Volunteers at the UNC Center for Civil Rights offices above Weaver Street Market in Carrboro will answer telephones during hours that the polls are open (6 a.m. to 8 p.m.). While fielding calls at the hotline, volunteers will also ask if the person reporting the problem is willing to speak with the media and, if so, will pass on this contact information to interested media representatives.

The statewide effort is being led by Mark Dorosin, senior attorney with the UNC Center for Civil Rights. Dorosin focuses on community inclusion and economic development. Before joining the Center for Civil Rights, Dorosin worked for the Duke University School of Law as the supervising attorney in the Community Enterprise Clinic, which provides direct legal representation to community organizations working to promote economic development in under-resourced and predominantly minority communities. Previously, he was an attorney and loan servicing officer at Self-Help, a leading North Carolina community development corporation.
