The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Dentistry will sponsor a two-day clinic that could provide free dental care for as many as several hundred patients. This clinic is offered in partnership with the N.C. Missions of Mercy (MOM) portable free dental program, a branch of the Open Door Dental Clinic of Alamance County. Media representatives are invited to cover the clinic.
Patients will be treated on a first-come, first-served basis each day, with registration beginning at 6 a.m., continuing until capacity is reached.
Students are largely coordinating the event, through the School of Dentistry’s student-led volunteer organization, ENNEAD (pronounced “in-ee-ad”) – including the planning stages, the clinic set up and patient care. School of Dentistry students, faculty members and other practitioners will provide patient care, with school staff members also assisting the clinic efforts.
The UNC School of Dentistry’s Dental Alumni Association is providing funding for costs associated with the two-day clinic, and community groups are providing food and other assistance.
Important information on coverage and patient privacy issues: Patient information is protected, under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Patients at the two-day clinic will be given forms to sign at the time of registration, authorizing that they give their permission to be filmed, photographed and interviewed. Those patients who have not given permission to be filmed, photographed and interviewed will be given blue-trimmed nametags with “UNC” written on them in blue to wear.
