Chancellor outlines opportunities for Charlotte students

UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Holden Thorp stopped in Charlotte and Greensboro on Wednesday as part of his tour of high schools and colleges across the state. Thorp visited West Charlotte High School, one of five high schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ Achievement Zone Learning Community, which was created in 2007 to boost the achievement of schools designated as underperforming.

Thorp starts blog en route to hometown

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Chancellor Holden Thorp has launched a new blog and is asking for feedback. The blog (which can be found at http://Holden.unc.edu) went live this week while the Fayetteville-born chancellor began a tour of North Carolina. …“As I begin my tenure as Carolina's chancellor, this blog will help me share thoughts, ideas and news about how the university is fulfilling its commitment to our students and to our state,” Thorp wrote on the blog.

Public invited to installation

The public is invited to attend the installation of Holden Thorp as UNC Chapel Hill's 10th chancellor on University Day, Oct. 12. Thorp will deliver an installation address during the free, public ceremony, which will begin at 3 p.m. in Polk Place, the quadrangle between South Building and Wilson Library.

Cynthia Bulik, director of the UNC Chapel Hill Eating Disorders Program, has received the 2008 Price Family Award for Research Excellence from the National Eating Disorders Association. Bulik is the William R. and Jeanne H. Jordan Distinguished Professor of Eating Disorders in the department of psychiatry at the UNC School of Medicine.

Chemistry honor awarded to Parr

Robert Parr, a professor emeritus of chemistry at UNC Chapel Hill, has been awarded the 2009 Award in Theoretical Chemistry from the American Chemical Society. The award recognizes innovative research in theoretical chemistry that either advances theoretical methodology or contributes to new discoveries about chemical systems.

Lithuania honors UNC's Hackney

Anthony Hackney, an exercise physiologist at UNC Chapel Hill, is being honored by the Lithuanian government for his research and service. Hackney is a professor and assistant chairman of the department of exercise and sport science in UNC's College of Arts and Sciences.

Visiting profs named at UNC

The UNC Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health has named James Merchant and Thomas C. Ricketts as Gillings Visiting Professors. Merchant was dean of the University of Iowa College of Public Health at until July 2008 and is a UNC alumnus. …Ricketts, a UNC professor of health policy and management, will use his professorship at L'ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sante Publique, which has campuses in Rennes and Paris, France.

Elizabeth Edwards calls McCain plan 'dangerous'

Fall ushers in restless deer, drive cautiously

Voices come out of hiding

Vimala Rajendran says she spent 16 years silently enduring abuse from her former husband. But for the ensuing 14 years, she has been anything but silent.
