The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has awarded more than $915,000 in academic merit scholarships for 2008-09 to 145 freshmen – 119 from North Carolina and 26 from out of state.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has awarded more than $915,000 in academic merit scholarships for 2008-09 to 145 freshmen –
119 from North Carolina and 26 from out of state.

The scholarships are renewable for each of three more years of undergraduate study, bringing the total value of the awards to more than $3.5 million. Many were created by private gifts.

Academic achievement was the chief selection criterion for 124 of the scholarships; solid academic records and strong commitment to community service were the criteria for the 21 Pogue Scholarships.

“These scholars are among the top students in the state and nation, and they have chosen to attend this University not only because of the monetary award and prestige that their scholarships represent, but also because of the enrichment opportunities provided by the scholars program,” said Dan Thornton, Ph.D., associate director for scholarships “These scholarships are awarded to students who really want to challenge themselves and are willing to look at things through different lenses.”

Descriptions of each type of scholarship, in alphabetical order, and donors who established them are listed below. Donors’ cities and towns are in bold. After the scholarship names, this year’s recipients are listed. The name of the student’s scholarship appears at the end of each listing. Refer to the start of this release for a description of the scholarship.

Alston-Pleasants Scholarship
The scholarship was established in 1958 by the late Missouri Alston Pleasants of Louisburg in memory of her grandfather, Willis “Congress” Alston. Income from her trust provides for a scholarship of $4,000 to a student from Franklin, Warren or Halifax counties.

Armfield Scholarship
The Armfield Scholarship was created in 2006 by former UNC Board of Trustees member William J. Armfield IV and his wife, Jane, of Richmond, Va., to help recruit top candidates to the University.  The scholarship awards $3,000 a year for four years.

Cameron Morrison Scholarships
James J. and Angelia M. Harris of Charlotte established these scholarships in memory of Morrison, a former North Carolina governor. Morrison received an honorary law degree from Carolina in 1922. The Cameron Morrison Scholarships are awarded each year to outstanding students from Mecklenburg and Richmond counties. Recipients receive $5,000 per year.

Carolina Scholars Awards
These awards, designed to help attract the most academically talented students to Carolina, recognize superlative achievement in high school and potential for success at UNC. Scholars from North Carolina receive $8,000 per year; out-of-state recipients receive the equivalent of tuition, fees, room and board for an in-state student annually for four years ($13,514 in 2008-09). Types of Carolina Scholarships are:

The Chancellor’s Carolina Scholars awards were established with University funds by the late Chancellor Michael Hooker.

The Elbert H. Denning Carolina Scholars Award was established in 1999 with a bequest from Elbert H. Denning, of Albemarle, NC.

The Pepper Dowd Carolina Scholars award was established by the Dowd Foundation of Charlotte in honor of Elizabeth “Pepper” Dowd. A 1953 Carolina graduate, Dowd was on the UNC Board of Trustees from 1983-1991, two years as vice chairman; a founder of the Arts and Sciences Foundation, serving on its board of directors as vice chairman from 1975-1995; and president of the General Alumni Association in 1992-1993.

Jane and John Gray Blount Ellison Jr. of Greensboro established the John Gray Blount Ellison Sr. Carolina Scholars Award in 2003 in honor of Mr. Ellison’s father. John Ellison Sr. graduated from the University in 1932. John Ellison Jr. received his undergraduate degree from the University in 1969 and his master’s degree in business administration in 1972.

The Haywood W. Hinkle Carolina Scholars Award was established in memory of Haywood W. Hinkle of Lexington. Hinkle graduated from Carolina in 1938 and owned Hinkle Grocery. 

William M. Lamont Jr. of Dallas, Texas, established the William M. Lamont Jr. Carolina Scholars Award in 1995. Lamont, president of MML Management Inc., graduated from the University in 1971.

On behalf of Maryland Alumni and Friends, Lee P. Woody Jr. of Baltimore established the Maryland Carolina Scholars Award in 1998.

Carolina alumni John C. Morisey Jr. and Frances Dayvault Morisey of Raleigh established the Morisey-Dayvault-Slater Carolina Scholars Award in 1998, in honor of the late John C. Morisey, the late Frank Wilson Dayvault and the late John G. Slater.

The John Turner Roughton Carolina Scholars Award was established in 2003 by Jane and John Gray Blount Ellison Jr. of Greensboro in honor of Mrs. Ellison’s father. Roughton graduated from the University in 1938.

The Shuford Carolina Scholars Award was established in 1993 by Peggy and A. Pope Shuford, James Baker Shuford, Dorothy Billings Shuford and Stephenson Pope Shuford, all of Hickory, and the Shuford Foundation.

The Louis C. Stephens Jr. Carolina Scholars Award was established in 1999 by William B. Harrison Jr. and Anne S. Harrison in honor of Mrs. Harrison’s father. Stephens, of Greensboro, graduated from the University in 1942 and was the president of Pilot Life. The Harrisons, of Greenwich, Conn., are University alumni.

The Mary Adams Stephens Carolina Scholars Award was established in 1999 by alumni William B. Harrison Jr. and Anne S. Harrison of Greenwich, Conn., in honor of Mrs. Harrison’s mother, of Greensboro.

The J. Harold Smith Carolina Scholarship was established in 1997 by William Haywood Smith and James Harold Smith Jr. of Burlington in honor of their father. J. Harold Smith Sr. of Burlington graduated from Carolina in 1933. He is a past member of UNC’s Board of Visitors and a past vice-president of the UNC General Alumni Association.

The late Elizabeth Taylor Williams of Winston-Salem, a 1950 graduate of the University, established the Taylor-Williams Carolina Scholars Award in 1996.

The David L. and Elizabeth Reese Ward Jr. Carolina Scholars Award was established by alumni David Livingstone Ward Jr. and Elizabeth Reese Ward of New Bern in 1998.

The Whitaker Carolina Scholars Award was established with a gift from Mr. and Mrs. John C. Whitaker, Jr. of Winston-Salem. John C. Whitaker Jr. graduated from the University in 1959.

The Winstead family and the Carl B. and Florence E. King Foundation of Dallas, Texas, established the Samuel G. Winstead Jr. Carolina Scholars award in honor of the late Winstead, a 1930 graduate of UNC and a Dallas lawyer and civic leader.

Class of 2012 Distinguished Scholarships
The UNC Board of Trustees established these scholarships of $2,500, awarded annually to attract academically talented freshmen from North Carolina.

Coker-Fox Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1980 by a gift from Preston and Charles D. Fox III of Honolulu, Hawaii; their sons, Charles D. Fox IV and Francis P. Fox: and the late Louise Coker of Chapel Hill. Scholars are nominated at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va., and chosen for academic achievement and leadership. The scholarships range from $5,000 for in-state recipients to $10,000 for recipients from outside North Carolina.

College Fellows Awards
These awards are academic, non-need-based scholarships of $2,500, awarded to North Carolina residents who plan majors in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences. A faculty committee chooses winners based on Scholastic Aptitude Test scores, difficulty of and performance in high school courses and potential for success in, and contribution to, the intellectual life of the college. Types of College Fellows awards include:

The Hargrove “Skipper” Bowles College Fellows Award was established in 1987 by family and friends in memory of Bowles, a 1941 Carolina graduate. A prominent Greensboro businessman, Bowles chaired the UNC Board of Trustees and the successful fund-raising effort to build the Dean E. Smith Center. His son, Erskine Bowles, is president of the 17-campus University of North Carolina system.

The James A. Bruton College Fellows Award was established by the late James A. Bruton of Pinehurst, who received his undergraduate degree from UNC in 1937. He retired as vice president for chemicals and plastics at Union Carbide Corp. 

The Newton Sudduth Calhoun College Fellows Award was established in 1985 by Calhoun’s wife, the late Beda Carlson Calhoun of Roaring Gap, and sons, John Sudduth Calhoun of Sarasota, Fla., a 1965 Carolina graduate; Eric Richardson Calhoun of Greensboro, a 1970 Carolina graduate; and the late David Carlson Calhoun. Newton Sudduth Calhoun graduated from Carolina in 1930.

Members of the graduating class of 1986 established the Class of 1986 College Fellows Award as their senior gift to the University.

The Duncan G. Coker Memorial College Fellows Award was established in 1996 by the late Tuck A. Coker of Hartsville, S.C., in memory of her son, Duncan.

The late Tuck A. Coker, of Hartsville, S.C., established the Richard G. Coker Memorial College Fellows Award in 1996 in memory of her husband. Richard G. Coker graduated from the University in 1921.

The Robert E. Mason II College Fellows Award was established by Esten and Robert E. Mason III of Charlotte in honor of Mr. Mason’s father.

The James Loring Seely College Fellows award was established in 1986 by friends of James Loring Seely of Newport Beach, Calif., who graduated from Carolina in 1956.

The Spencer/Goody College Fellows Award was established by Ann Lewallen Spencer of Winston-Salem in 1985, who graduated from the University in 1950 and was president and chief executive officer of Goody Manufacturing Co. in Winston-Salem. She was UNC’s Board of Visitors and the boards of directors of the General Alumni Association and Friends of the Library. She has devoted much time and energy toward fundraising and advocacy to benefit the University.

The Weil-Rosenthal College Fellows Award was established in 1996 by the Wayne Foundation of Goldsboro in honor of the longstanding business partnership between the Weil and Rosenthal families.

Chewning-Wells Academic Scholarship
Thomas N. Chewning, of Richmond, Va., who graduated from the University in 1967, and James M. Wells III of Atlanta, who graduated in 1968, established the scholarship in 1991.

James R. Copland Jr. Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1992 by Copland’s wife, the late Lillian Copland, and his sons, James R. Copland III and Ronald Copland, all of Burlington, and their companies, Copland Inc. and Copland Fabrics. The scholarship, which honors one of Alamance County’s leading businessmen, goes to the person judged by the University to be Alamance County’s most distinguished and promising high school graduate. It recognizes outstanding academic performance, strength of character, leadership and physical vigor. One winner receives $7,750 annually. The scholarship also permits entrance to the honors program and provides $3,000 for study abroad.

Herbert Worth Jackson Scholarships
The late Annie H. Jackson of Richmond, Va., established these scholarships in memory of her husband. Herbert Jackson was an 1886 graduate of Carolina who became successful in business and civic affairs and was a member of the UNC Board of Trustees. The scholarships provide $2,500 each.

Old Well Scholarships
These scholarships recruit and help support students from North Carolina based on distinguished academic performance.

The Josh Dormagen Old Well Scholarship was created by Joseph S. and Jackie W. Dormagen of Gurnee, Ill., in honor of their son, Josh, who had planned to attend Carolina before his death in 1998. The scholarship is based on outstanding academic and extracurricular achievement in high school and promise for continued success as a scholar and leader at Carolina. It provides $3,750 annually.

Retired U.S. District Judge Truman Hobbs of Montgomery, Ala., who graduated from UNC in 1942, established the Truman Hobbs Old Well Scholarship in 1997.

The Fred N. Kahn Old Well Scholarship was created by Fred Natchman Kahn of Asheville, who graduated from UNC in 1957. The fund was established to provide merit scholarships to outstanding students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership ability and promise of success at Carolina.

The Killian Family Old Well Scholarship was established in 1999 by alumnus Thomas W. Killian of Summit, N.J., in honor of his parents, Bill and Betty Killian of Pinehurst. The scholarship supports outstanding students from New Hanover County.

The Ben Robinette Old Well Scholarship was established in memory of Robinette, a cross-country runner for South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte. Robinette was struck by a vehicle and killed during practice in 1998. Funded by the Foundation for the Carolinas, the scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student from Charlotte-Mecklenburg who is a competitive runner, demonstrates high academic achievement and is active in community service and extracurricular endeavors. It provides an annual award of $2,500.

Charles A. Meisenheimer Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1962 by the late Charles A. Meisenheimer of Charlotte, who graduated from UNC in 1909.  The scholarship is awarded to a graduate of a public school in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area, based on recommendations by counselors in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system.  It carries an annual award of $3,000.

Joseph E. and Grace Needham Pogue Scholarships
These scholarships were established in 1977 with a gift from the late Joseph Pogue, Ph.D., and his wife, Grace. A Raleigh native, Pogue received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UNC in 1906 and 1907. He earned a doctorate at Yale University and became a leading geologist and mineralogist. He was a curator at the Smithsonian Institution, a geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey and a successful businessman in the oil industry.

The University received his bequest of $11 million in 1976. Income from the Pogue Fund supports these scholarships and other academic needs.

The Pogue is UNC’s only merit scholarship requiring an application. Established to attract the most outstanding North Carolina high school students, the scholarships have traditionally emphasized minority applicants. But students of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Successful candidates demonstrate and value academic achievement, have strong leadership potential and identify ways to implement positive change. They show clear evidence of commitment to their local communities and display maturity and wisdom in trying to impact important issues.

Pogue Scholars from North Carolina receive $7,500 for each of four years of study. Out-of-state recipients receive $13,036, the equivalent of tuition, fees, room and board for an in-state student.

Col. John H. and Lillian T. Robinson Scholarships
The Col. John H. and Lillian T. Robinson Scholarships were created in 2005 by a $10 million bequest from the estate of Col. John Harvey Robinson, a career Army officer from San Antonio, Texas, who earned a master’s degree in business administration at Carolina in 1957. The awards also are named in honor of his wife, Lillian “Tommy” Robinson. In-state recipients receive $5,000 annually for four years. Out-of-state recipients receive the equivalent of tuition, fees, room and board for an in-state student annually for four years ($13,514 in 2008-09).

G. Stephen and Margaret G. Diab Founders Scholarship
The Diab Founders scholarship was established in 2007 by G. Stephen and Margaret G. Diab of Wilmington (NC). Preference is given to students from New Hanover County. The scholarship provides $3,000 annually.

Pecheles Automotive Founders Scholarship

The Pecheles Automotive Founders scholarship was established in 2007 by Brian and Suzanne Pecheles of Greenville (NC). Preference is given to students from Pitt or Beaufort counties in North Carolina. It provides $3,000 annually.

Yeargan Founders Scholarship
The Yeargan Foundation Charitable Trusts of Garner, which supports medical and education programs in the Triangle area, established the scholarship in 2006. Preference is given to students who graduate from Garner High School, with second preference to students from Garner. It provides $3,000 annually.
