More than 700 African American higher education professionals, including presidents, chancellors, and student affairs directors were surveyed for the Top 50 Colleges for African Americans rankings. Carolina is listed 32nd on the magazine’s list.

UNC grant will go to eye of the storm

The research undertaken as part of a multi-million dollar U.S. Department of Homeland Security grant awarded to UNC chapel hill will have a "profound" influence on the ability to conceive and implement strategies for dealing with natural disasters in this country, according to U.S. Rep. David Price. The congressman was one of several dignitaries who spoke Tuesday as UNC celebrated the grant, which establishes the university as headquarters of the Center of Excellence for the Study of Natural Disasters, Coastal Infrastructure and Emergency Management.

Institute eyes stronger homeland security, research

Better understanding of the root causes of terrorism is as important as the development of new technologies in protecting us against those who would do us harm. …He (David Schanzer) said the collaboration among RTI, Duke University, the UNC Chapel Hill and the North Carolina Military Foundation, which fueled the idea for the institute, hopefully will lead to growth in North Carolina's economy.

New UNC lab to test water's arsenic levels

The newest Gillings Innovation Laboratory at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health will tap new technology to help researchers examine individual differences in the metabolism of inorganic arsenic and in the susceptibility to adverse effects associated with chronic exposures to arsenic.

UNC issues warnings for on-campus smoking

University of North Carolina public safety officers began issuing warnings Tuesday to people smoking near campus buildings. Smoking has been prohibited within 100 feet of any university building since January to limit exposure to secondhand smoke. UNC officials have worked to educate people about the policy in recent months and to provide smoking cessation resources to students, faculty and staff.
UNC will not renew contract with Victoria's Secret

The baby blue University of North Carolina logo will no longer be featured on items at Victoria’s Secret. UNC officials have decided not to renew the university’s contract with the lingerie vendor, which includes the UNC logo in their Pink Collegiate line of apparel.
