Housing and Residential Education
Carolina is housing more than 8,600 students on campus in 31 residence halls and three apartment communities. The Old East and Old West residence halls on Cameron Avenue are closed this year for renovation. Workers will correct and/or replace the existing mechanical systems, replace or repair damaged structural elements and roofing and improve the quality of the interior spaces. The restoration of the historic exterior brick walls also is anticipated.
Carmichael Residence Hall on Stadium Drive reopens after a one-year, $6.1 million project to install a new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. In addition, carpets and floor tiles in building hallways and stairwells were replaced, and new furniture was installed in the rooms.
Campus Roads

Move-in
Student move-in is currently under way, with the busiest days expected on Friday (Aug. 15), Saturday (Aug. 16) and Sunday (Aug. 17). Due to the high volume of traffic expected for move-in over the weekend, the following traffic patterns will be in place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 16) and Sunday (Aug 17) as students move into residence halls across campus:

  • Raleigh Street will be one-way going south from Cameron Avenue to South Road, with no access from South Road.
  • Battle Lane from Boundary to Franklin streets will be open only to Senlac and Hooper street residents and be one-way going north.

FallFest

South Road from Country Club Road to Raleigh Street will close to traffic from 5 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 17) to 5 a.m. Monday (Aug. 18) for FallFest, UNC’s annual, alcohol-free event welcoming students to campus. Parking will be reserved beginning at 4 p.m. in the School of Government deck, House Undergraduate Library lot and the Frank Porter Graham Student Union lot at Raleigh and South and on South Road. Chapel Hill Transit bus routes that may be detoured are the U and NU weekend routes.

Fall 2008 construction

Please be aware of notable construction in the following areas:

  • Boshamer Stadium construction along Ridge Road will cause the periodic narrowing of traffic flow or closure of a single lane of traffic near the project. Unless otherwise communicated, traffic should be steadily maintained throughout the fall, even in the case of a lane closure, by use of flagmen.
  • Western Manning Drive lane reductions have occurred adjacent to the School of Dentistry due to a construction project. Please be alert to merging traffic and changes to pedestrian crossing patterns in this area and along South Columbia Street just north of the intersection with Manning Drive.
  • Bell Tower Deck construction has closed the Bell Tower Lot off South Road to permit holder and evening parking. Also, the traffic signal has been moved from its traditional location at Bell Tower Drive approximately 100 yards to the east and closer to the UNC Bell Tower itself at the intersection with the one-time service entrance to the parking area.

Updates

Construction will affect traffic at various campus locations all year. The UNC Department of Public Safety provides up-to-date traffic and parking information on its Web site, http://www.dps.unc.edu/dps/, under “breaking news.” Related link:

Chapel Hill Transit

  • Adjustments to CCX, NS Routes begin Monday (Aug. 18). Express service will no longer be offered from the Southern Village Park-and-Ride Lot. However, three additional NS Route early-morning trips have been added, departing the Southern Village Lot at 5:50 a.m., 6:10 a.m., and 6:30 a.m., and taking eight minutes to arrive at the UNC Hospitals stop on Manning Drive. For more information, including maps and route schedules, visit http://www.dps.unc.edu/NewsLinks/CCXWeb/CCX.cfm
  • Bible Church Park and Ride discontinued after Thursday (Aug. 14). The Bible Church Park-and-Ride service and supporting BCX Route will be discontinued at the close of business on Thursday (Aug. 14). BC Commuter Alternative Program (CAP) parking permits are being honored in all other CAP park-and-ride lots. Adjustments have been made to the D route, which now offers express service from the location of the former park-and ride-lot.
