Stephen Anderson, a pianist and assistant professor of jazz studies and composition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has a new compact disc, “Forget Not” (Summit Records), out in April.

The release features Anderson as composer and pianist in a trio that also includes Jeff Eckels on bass and Joel Fountain on drums. Fans of Michael Feldman’s “Whad’Ya Know” nationally syndicated radio show may remember Eckels’ work featured there. Fountain was a drummer for the late jazz legend Maynard Ferguson.

Anderson’s compositions have been performed by ensembles and artists including the West Point Military Academy Band, the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra, the Lynn Seaton Trio and the Dallas Chamber Orchestra. He also has had a film score broadcast on PBS. Anderson has been active as a clinician and performing artist and is a former keyboardist for country-western recording artist Kevin Sharp.

Anderson won the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival piano competition in 1997. He received an honorable mention in the International Society of Basses composition competition in 2002.

Anderson has taught in the music department in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences since 2005. He received doctoral and master’s degrees from the University of North Texas and a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University, all in composition.
