Oliver W. “Al” Alphin of Durham and Surf City, N.C., has created a scholarship fund to honor his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Reevis S. Alphin and Barbara Gilliam Alphin, both of Sanford, N.C.

The Reevis S. and Barbara Gilliam Alphin Scholarship Fund will provide need-based aid to students from Lee, Duplin or Pender counties. It was given as part of the Carolina First Campaign, UNC’s most recent fund-raising drive. It is anticipated that initial awards will be made for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Oliver Alphin and his late wife, Billie Collins Alphin, created another scholarship during the Bicentennial Campaign for Carolina in 1997. The Oliver W. and Billie Collins Alphin Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Duplin or Cabarrus county students who attend the University. The scholarships – awarded for academic achievement and financial need – are given annually to one recipient from each county.

Dr. Reevis Alphin was born in Duplin County and is a UNC graduate (class of 1951). He received his master’s degree from Duke University and his Ph.D. from the Medical College of Virginia. Barbara Gilliam Alphin is a native of Lee County, and is a graduate of the UNC School of Pharmacy (class of 1954).

A double Carolina graduate (B.S. ’58, J.D. ’61) Oliver Alphin said he wanted to honor his brother and sister-in-law and the University, and help good students get a superior education. “My brother was the first in our family to attend UNC, but now we have a total of 51 years at UNC, and 19 degrees,” he said.
