Music, street performers, ethnic foods and more will enliven a global village on Thursday (March 27) at the FedEx Global Education Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the atrium of the center, located at McCauley and Pittsboro streets, will be transformed into a village that creates the types of open-air markets common in Africa, Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.
The event, free to the public, will invite attendees to participate in hair braiding, calligraphy and other activities. They can visit simulated clothing and rug shops that are so much a part of everyday life in many countries. Cultural artifacts will be on display. Olives, spanikopita, traditional teas and more will be served; belly dancing, Turkish dancing, African drumming and more will be performed; artists will include the Kabari Drama Troupe, Zankiliwa, Rhythmicity and Gamelan Nyai Saraswati.
Whole Foods Market, Mediterranean Deli, Qdoba, Chamas, G&G Gourmet, Inc., The Palace International Restaurant and Boleros will provide the food.
Limited parking is available in a deck under the building.
The global village is an initiative of AIESEC, an international student organization in 1,100 universities worldwide.
