Nearly 150 years ago, American politics were more sectionalist than partisan. Strong division between North and South thrust the young country into a devastating Civil War.
Scholars, authors and historians will discuss the ramifications of that conflict in a Civil War Symposium beginning at 8:15 a.m. March 29 in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Carroll Hall Auditorium. The free public event will feature faculty from the University of Virginia; University of California, Los Angeles; King’s College of London and UNC, discussing the American Civil War from secession to Hollywood.
The symposium honors Alan C. Stephenson, a Morehead Scholar and 1967 UNC graduate in history, who established UNC’s Stephenson Distinguished Professorship in American Civil War Studies in 2002. Stephenson is a mergers and acquisitions attorney and partner in New York’s Cravath, Swaine and Moore law firm. Joseph Glatthaar, Ph.D., holds the professorship and chairs the UNC curriculum in peace, war and defense.
The seminar is co-sponsored by the curriculum, the Center for the Study of the American South and the history department. For a schedule, topics and speakers, visit http://www.unc.edu/depts/csas/Conferences/civilwar.html .
