Saturday, March 15, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Center for Dramatic Art
Country Club Road near Raleigh Road
Chapel Hill

Approximately 175 actors, singers and dancers will compete in the nation’s largest combined outdoor drama auditions, vying for jobs in plays this summer ranging from the oldest, North Carolina’s “The Lost Colony” on Roanoke Island, to the one of the largest, “Texas” in Canyon, Texas.

Representatives of 10 theatres from and across the country will view and choose cast and staff members at the auditions, held annually by the Institute of Outdoor Drama, a public service agency at UNC.

Media representatives are invited to cover the auditions. Audio and video prospects are excellent. Please check in first at the table in the center’s front lobby.

Audition applications were due in advance; registration is closed.

Acting and singing auditions
8:30 a.m. to noon

Lights and flashes may not be used.

Dance auditions
2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Lights and flashes may be used to cover these auditions – the most visual of the day.

Coverage must not disrupt candidates’ concentration.

Prospective technicians will be interviewed. Those include stunt and combat actors, pyrotechnicians and staff skilled in design, lighting, sound and special effects.

Possible story angles: Aspiring actors and actresses from media outlets’ hometowns; what it takes to succeed in outdoor drama; whether these hopefuls include the next generation’s Andy Griffiths, Goldie Hawns and Denzel Washingtons, to name just a few who got their start in outdoor drama; the quirkiest stunt or theater technician jobs to be filled; previewing this year’s season in North Carolina.

Directions from the east: Exit I-40 at N.C. 54 toward Chapel Hill. After passing under the U.S. 15-501 bypass (Fordham Boulevard) bridge over 54, which becomes Raleigh Road, go uphill and turn right onto Country Club Road at the next light. At the first light on Country Club, turn left into the center lot.

Directions from the west: Exit I-40 at N.C. 86 South toward Chapel Hill. The road becomes Martin Luther King Boulevard. After the steep hill up to the central business district, go straight across Rosemary and Franklin streets, then left at the next light, onto Cameron Avenue (intersection at the Carolina Inn). Travel straight, pass the Old Well on the left, and go straight at the next light, at Raleigh Street. The road becomes Country Club Road and bears right. Turn right at the next light.

Parking: Media may park in the Cobb Deck behind the center.

On-site contact: Institute of Outdoor Drama Director Rob Fox will be available for interviews. Contact him this week at (919) 962-1328, or, to find him on site Saturday, request help from audition staff members, who will be in red T-shirts.
