The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has become the first college or university in the state to establish a chapter of Tau Sigma, a national honor society for transfer students.  From the past two entering transfer classes, 346 transfer students were invited this month to join UNC-Chapel Hill’s chapter.

“I am very proud of our transfer student population and the contributions they make to the Carolina community,” said Melissa Exum, PhD, associate vice chancellor for Student Affairs and dean of students. “I am pleased that we are able to bestow this special recognition to them for their outstanding academic achievements.”

Tau Sigma membership is conferred by invitation and is granted to those students who have transferred to a four-year institution after having completed at least two semesters at another college or university while earning at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average.

Nationally, Tau Sigma gave out more than $10,000 in scholarships to transfer students during the 2006-07 academic year. UNC-Chapel Hill admits approximately 800 transfer students each year. A formal induction ceremony for the inaugural chapter members will be held in the fall during Family Weekend.
