Martin Eakes, founder and CEO of Self-Help, will speak about “Subprime Lending, Social Justice and Self-Help” at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School Oct. 11 at 5:30 p.m.

The talk by Eakes, a nationally recognized expert on development finance, is sponsored by the Center for Sustainable Enterprise at UNC Kenan-Flagler’s Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise.

Eakes co-founded the community development lender Self-Help in Durham in 1980. Self-Help reaches people who are underserved by conventional lenders through the support of socially responsible citizens and institutions across the United States. Since its inception, Self-Help has provided more than $5 billion in financing to 55,000 homebuyers, small businesses and nonprofits.

The North Carolina native holds a law degree from Yale University, a master’s degree from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public Affairs and a BA from Davidson College.

UNC Kenan-Flagler’s Center for Sustainable Enterprise helps executives and future business leaders understand how social and environmental considerations are changing the competitive landscape of business.
