Among the most enduring and cherished groups in a cappella music, Take 6 will perform at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Memorial Hall on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m.

With roots in gospel music and doo-wop, Take 6’s rich harmonies, vocal fireworks and gospel message will open Carolina Performing Arts’ American Roots series for 2007-08.

With 18 Grammy nominations, 10 Grammy Awards, 10 Dove Awards, one Soul Train Award and two NAACP Image Awards, the sextet has appeared with music legends including Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Al Jarreau, Stevie Wonder and Wynton Marsalis.

A major influence on many all-male R&B groups of the mid-’90s, including Boyz II Men, Take 6 has solidified their place in music history.

“Great singers, incredible harmonies – what more could you want?” said UNC’s Executive Director for the Arts Emil Kang.

In 2006, Take 6 self-released their first album in four years, “Feels Good,” which reached No. 10 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart.

This season’s American Roots series also features a Nov. 4 concert with Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas and Edgar Meyer and a Feb. 15 performance by singer/songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter.

Tickets for Take 6’s performance are available at www.carolinaperformingarts.org, by calling (919) 843-3333 or at the Memorial Hall Box Office on Cameron Avenue, open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets range from $50 to $24. Tickets for Carolina students are $10. Tickets for all other performances in the 2007-08 Carolina Performing Arts season also are on sale.
