Dianne Reeves, considered by many to be one of America’s pre-eminent jazz vocalists, will perform at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Sunday, Oct. 7.

Reeves, who was featured in George Clooney’s 2005 film “Good Night, and Good Luck,” will appear at 7:30 p.m. in the Beasley-Curtis Auditorium of Memorial Hall.

The winner of four Grammy Awards, Reeves has recently begun to delve back into traditional vocal jazz after years spent experimenting with jazz-pop and African rhythms. Her sultry sound and propensity for vocal improvisation have helped her become one of today’s more distinctive voices in modern jazz.

“Dianne Reeves is one of a very small handful of leading jazz vocalists working today,” said Emil Kang, UNC’s executive director for the arts. “She has risen to the top thanks to her one-of-a-kind voice and her abilities as both a singer and a storyteller.”

Reeves’ interpretations of classic songs from composers as varied as Cole Porter and Oscar Brown Jr. have earned her many accolades throughout her 31-year career, as well as an appointment as the first creative chair for jazz with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

She has toured with Sergio Mendes, Harry Belafonte and other standouts and collaborated with trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic, among others.

Reeves’ concert will open Carolina Performing Arts’ 2007-08 jazz series, which also includes performances by the SFJazz Collective, an all-star ensemble, on March 1 and Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba on March 29.
