A reception for Mississippi painter Martha Ferris, amid an exhibit of her works, will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. April 7 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The UNC Center for the Study of the American South is displaying Ferris’ pastel portraits, encaustics and more through May 29 at its Love House and Hutchins Forum, located at 410 E. Franklin St. Gallery hours are 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays.

Ferris, who lives and works on her family’s farm near Vicksburg, has exhibited works in solo and group shows across the country. She has created public art projects in Vicksburg and Jackson, Miss.

“Ferris’ work is not just smart and beautiful, it proves that artists needn’t stick to the tired formulas when depicting pop music themes,” wrote an art critic for the Times Picayune of New Orleans in 2002.
